Even though sex toys have been available to buy and use for some time, it used to be rare for anyone to talk about them or admit owning one.

However, in the last decade or so, sex toys are becoming more and more in the public eye to the point where they have become more or less mainstream.

Many sources cite popular ladies romantic sitcom Sex and The City as one of the main reasons for this trend, particularly the first appearance of the ‘Rampant Rabbit’ in Series 1. The beloved characters in the show were openly appreciative of the famous vibrator and this did a world of good in removing the stigma which may have once been associated with sex toy ownership.

Ever since that episode, sex toys have been appearing in mainstream media more and more. Celebrities are boasting about using them, columnists are offering advice and techniques regarding their use, and new products are being previewed in popular glossy magazines.

This has resulted in a huge growth of the sex toy industry as a whole. Dildos and vibrators are flying off the shelves!

The internet should also take a lot of credit for the increase in sex toy ownership. It is now easier than ever to discretely purchase and transport a sex toy home thanks to the influx of online sex shops appearing on the internet. Most of these shops offer a huge range of toys in all shapes and sizes to satisfy the needs of any customer, whether male or female.

Of course, it’s unlikely whether the sex toy industry will ever go fully mainstream. By its very nature, masturbation is something that is normally kept private. However, the publicity that the industry has been able to stir up has made a lot of money for the producers and retailers of such sex toys and a plenty of pleasure for customers.
